Community members are urged to help clean up the Mandurah Estuary by getting involved in the ‘Reel it in’ clean-up event in Mandurah on Saturday October 19, 2019.
Small groups of volunteers will target beaches and foreshore areas, while scuba divers from the Underwater Explorers Club of Western Australia and Oceano Dive Centre will focus on problem jetties and platforms where fishing line accumulates in the water.
The event is being co-ordinated by the Parks and Wildlife Service at the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and is part of Tangaroa Blue’s 2019 Beach Clean‑up event.
The event runs from 9am to 1pm. Registration, briefings, equipment and a first aid station will be at the Port Bouvard Yacht Club and parking is available on-site.

As stated by Environment Minister Stephen Dawson:
“Discarded fishing line can have significant impacts on our wildlife, as it doesn’t break down in the environment.
“The Department’s ‘Reel it in’ fishing line bin project provides dedicated bins for discarded tackle and bait bags at popular fishing sites and is helping reduce fishing waste entering the marine environment.
“The event is a great way to make a difference to the health of the Estuary by removing rubbish and discarded fishing waste before it ends up in the water.”
As stated by Mandurah MLA David Templeman:
“I’m pleased to see this important event being held in Mandurah to improve the amenity and health of the Estuary.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who enjoys spending time around the Estuary to give back to the environment.”
