Bass Coast Shire Council has partnered with the YMCA Bass Coast to present a series of skateboarding clinics for girls in local schools.
The All Aboard skateboarding program, facilitated by Ownlife, was launched at Newhaven College recently, to encourage girls who may not have the confidence to try skateboarding in public, to give it a go in a safe environment.
The Program focuses on fun, fitness and empowerment, and provides the girls with introductory skateboarding skills and useful tips, necessary to navigate skate spaces and parks.
These workshops are part of the ‘ramp up skate’ program in Bass Coast and more workshops will be held in primary and secondary schools next year. Action Sports YMCA have also trained local skaters to become skate coaches to ensure that skating beginners will continue to have opportunities to learn skills and build confidence.
Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari said programs like these are important to encourage active participation in a range of sports.
“Not everyone likes the same sports, so it is great to see a Program that gives young people the confidence and skills to try something different, like skateboarding,” Cr Tessari said.
“These Programs can also help to encourage female and family friendly skate park culture, which is really important.
“Traditionally, males dominate the sport, which can be intimidating for younger children, females and less skilled skaters. Council and the YMCA are aiming to encourage more people of all ages to enjoy skating and our skate parks.”
Since the development of the Bass Coast Skate Strategy, Council has delivered several key skate projects for all levels of ability and has facilities in Inverloch, Newhaven, Wonthaggi, Cowes, Corinella and Grantville.
