Excitement is building within the local sporting community – as Wonthaggi’s three court, multi-sport stadium, part of the new Wonthaggi Secondary College Senior Campus, nears completion.
Designed to be shared by the community and the school, the multi-sport stadium will provide a huge boost for local sporting clubs and associations. Once opened, it will be managed by the College in partnership with Bass Coast Shire Council.
Council has been heavily involved with the Project, working alongside the College, the Victorian School Building Authority and contractors from the early stages of planning to this exciting stage of project completion.
The Stadium features a Show Court with a 500+ seating capacity for basketball and netball, while another two courts can be used for badminton, basketball, netball and volleyball. With high standard scoreboards, backboards and a sprung floor, the Stadium will cater for local level games and provide the opportunity to host high level competitions.
“Our community has been calling for better sporting facilities for many years, so it is great to see this project really coming together,” Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari said.
“Once complete, the whole Bass Coast sporting community will have access to the Stadium and it is sure to be a facility our local players can be proud of.”
The Stadium will also provide a much anticipated new home for the Wonthaggi Basketball Association (WBA), which has over 400 members and no home facilities. Other local clubs and associations can also apply to access the facility.
President of the WBA, Cathy Garnham, said they are absolutely thrilled with the progress of the new stadium.
“It is truly a world class facility right here in our backyard. The facility will enable our Association to deliver improved and varied programs for our members and we cannot wait for the doors to open,” Ms Garnham said.
“Beyond basketball, the Stadium will undoubtedly have a positive impact on a number of sporting groups and will be a terrific asset for our community.
“We look forward to working with Council and the College to maximise the usage of the facility and ensure the continued growth and sustainability of basketball in Bass Coast,” Ms Garnham concluded.
Council contributed $1.7 million towards multi-sport stadium project, with additional funding sourced through successful applications to Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Better Indoor Stadiums Fund ($1.5 million) and the Victorian Government’s Shared Facilities Fund ($3 million).
The Stadium and the School Campus will be open in time for the 2020 school year.
