Gippsland senior secondary students interested in a career in health had the opportunity to engage with positive role models in the community at a dinner in Moe last Tuesday.
The Inspiring Young People in Health dinner gave Year 10, 11 and 12 students from schools across the Baw Baw and Latrobe local government areas the opportunity to hear from and interact with those working or studying in healthcare.
Six speakers from the local community, including an occupational therapist, speech therapist, podiatrist, radiation therapist, paramedic and physiologist, shared stories of their career pathways, aspirations and personal journeys to encourage the young people to start thinking about their own career and pathway.
The aim of the evening was to inspire the young people to set goals and work towards them even though there may be hiccups or roadblocks along the way.
Baw Baw Latrobe Local Learning and Employment Network (BBLLLEN) Partnership Broker Lisa Briggs said that the students found the event increased not only their understanding of careers and pathways in the health industry but also their opportunities for engaging with health professionals relating to their career interest.
“Some of the young people found that the event opened them up to new ideas or more knowledge about multiple pathways in the health industry; others found that it reinforced or refined their chosen career interest,” Lisa said.
“One student even changed their career interest after seeing how many people were passionate about their careers and how there were different pathways to get into their desired career.”
This event was the most recent in a series of Inspiring Young People events hosted by BBLLLEN across Baw Baw and Latrobe in recent years.
BBLLLEN hosted the event with the support of Latrobe Health Innovation Zone, Rural Workforce Agency Victoria, and Monash Rural Health.
