Gippsland teachers recently came together at Nakunbalook Environmental and Cultural Education Centre in Sale to discuss sustainability initiatives and teaching methods as part of Sustainability Victoria’s ResourceSmart Schools Program.
The collaborative event featured East Gippsland Shire Council’s Waste Education Officer Tina Bills and Wellington Shire Council’s Sustainability Education Officer Sharon Ray. They talked about how schools can be helped to reach their green goals. Ms Bills noted that teachers can contact her via the Council website for guidance on waste monitoring, designing recycling bin signage and undertaking other waste-related projects and initiatives.
Gippsland Grammar teacher Todd Cook spoke about how his school’s revegetation and sustainability projects are interwoven with wellbeing outcomes for students and the wider school community.
East Gippsland Shire Council Mayor Cr Tom Crook said collaboration with Gippsland teachers to advance sustainability through the ResourceSmart Schools Program is an important initiative.
“This initiative cuts costs, reduces consumption, and integrates sustainability into school curriculums. At Council, we’re dedicated to helping schools achieve sustainability goals and create a more eco-conscious future,” Cr Crook said.
Representatives from various schools, including St Brendan’s Primary School in Lakes Entrance, Gippsland Grammar’s Bairnsdale Campus, Stratford Primary School, Sacred Heart Primary School in Morwell, Kosciuszko Street Primary School in Traralgon and Foster Primary School also participated in the event.
