Giving back to community

Finding opportunities to volunteer is made easier with a range of roles to suit different ages, abilities and interests in Bayside.

Huw Jenkins was able to match his passion for the arts with a desire to give back to the community by applying to volunteer at the Bayside Gallery.

“Volunteering helps my passion and it’s nice to engage with other professionals, it’s for personal enjoyment as well as giving back,” said Huw.

Huw has only been volunteering at the Gallery for seven weeks and he is ready to put his hand up for more shifts.

“The process is simple, I corresponded via email and the staff were lovely to work with. I’ve already told them that I’m available if they need me,” said Huw.

Bayside supports over 250 registered volunteers across 40 volunteer programs in arts and culture, library services, healthy ageing, open space, environmental sustainability, and community care.

Anita McKinnon volunteers for the Connections program, which invites older residents with dementia to enjoy exhibitions on offer at the Gallery.

Anita has been volunteering with Connections since 2016 and has seen the profound impact the program has on those suffering from dementia.

“I’ve always felt that one should give back to the local community and for me this program helps me pass on my knowledge to help others,” said Anita.

“It is wonderful seeing such joy on our participants face’s when they look at a piece of artwork.”

Our volunteers contribute approximately 1500 hours per month to various programs and services.

One of those volunteers is Bell, who is part of Bayside’s Disability Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee.

Bell urges others to “think about what they are interested in and just have a look at what is out there because there are so many opportunities, more than what most people think”.
