The Morrison and Marshall Governments have continued their congestion busting infrastructure investment, announcing $35 million towards the jointly funded upgrade of the Glen Osmond and Fullarton Roads intersection.
The intersection is a major link between the Hills and the Adelaide CBD areas, with both Glen Osmond and Fullarton Roads being key traffic and public transport corridors.
Approximately 55,000 vehicles pass through the intersection daily and experience unnecessary travel delays.
Historical crash data for this intersection also indicates 34 crashes recorded between 2013 and 2017, of which there were 11 casualty crashes.
That’s why the Morrison and Marshall Governments will upgrade this intersection to:
- Improve travel times;
- Improve safety for all users;
- Improve network reliability; and,
- Improve economic productivity.
Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said the Morrison Government has invested $5.3 billion in public transport and road infrastructure to bust congestion across Adelaide and South Australia.
“The Morrison Government is continuing to invest in important congesting busting infrastructure across South Australia,” said Minister Tudge.
“This intersection upgrade will help cut travel times for motorists as well as help boost economic productivity by improved a key freight corridor.”
Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll said the Marshall Government would be investing $17.5 million in the upcoming State Budget to help deliver this important intersection upgrade.
“We are partnering with the Morrison Government to deliver nine new intersection upgrades across Adelaide to cut travel times and bust congestion,” said Minister Knoll.
“The Marshall Government is continuing to invest in productive infrastructure which will also help grow our economy and support local jobs, especially in our construction industry.”
Liberal for Sturt James Stevens said the Glen Osmond and Fullarton Roads intersection was a major traffic choke point for the local community.
“Both Glen Osmond and Fullarton Roads are major traffic and public transport corridors and there is a real problem with traffic delays at this intersection,” said Mr Stevens.
“That’s why the Morrison Government is investing $17.5 million to upgrade this intersection to cut travel times and ease congestion.
“We want to ensure that South Australians are spending less time stuck in traffic and are getting home or where they want to go faster.”
The project will be jointly and equally funded by the Federal and State Governments.
Early works are planned to start in 2020, with project completion expected in 2022.
Community and stakeholder engagement are an important part of the planning process and DPTI will continue to work with residents, land owners and business owners as the preferred option is developed.
