AFL and elite sports fans rejoice – tickets are on sale now for the Gold Coast SUNS clash against Hawthorn at TIO Stadium on Saturday, 28 May 2022. The game is part of the prestigious Sir Doug Nicholls Round, and sees the Hawks play in the Territory for the first time since 1991.
The game will be followed by a Gold Coast SUNS match against North Melbourne the following weekend, on Saturday, 4 June 2022. Tickets for that game will go on sale on 29 April 2022.
The games are part of the Northern Territory Government’s partnership with AFL, which sees two games played in the Territory each year. This year there will be three games, with the Melbourne Demons set to face Port Adelaide later in the year at TIO Traeger Park in Alice Springs. Details for that game will be confirmed later in the season.
In great news for Territory SUNS fans, Gold Coast SUNS is offering special Territory SUN memberships, which guarantee access to the games, starting at $30 for one-game junior general admission and $55 for adults, or $39 for juniors and $75 for adults for two-game memberships.

Quotes from Minister for Major Events Natasha Fyles
“AFL has a strong fan base in the Territory, so it’s great to see three games being played here this year – two in the Top End and one in Alice Springs. It’s extra special that we are hosting a Sir Doug Nicholls Round game. The round celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players, and the Territory is the natural home for such an important game.
“AFL games see an influx of people into the Territory, including not only the teams and their support crews, but also interstate fans using the match as a chance to enjoy a holiday here. This year we have two games in Darwin on consecutive weekends, which is ideal for people wanting to enjoy an extended break in the Territory.
“It’s also ideal family-friendly weekend entertainment for Territorians, so grab your friends and family, get behind your team, and get out and enjoy elite sport right here in the Territory.”
Quotes from Head of AFLNT Sam Gibson:
“We’re thrilled to welcome back the SUNS next month and watch them go head-to-head with the Hawks in Darwin in what will be an exciting game to watch with both teams on the rise.
“The SUNS have a great connection with the NT and with the Hawks being back in town for the first time since 1991, it promises to be a great spectacle for Top End footy fans.
“Being able to honour Sir Doug Nicholls and the rich Indigenous history of our game as part of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round is great for the NT. As a marquee match of the round, we know tickets will be popular, so we urge footy lovers to get in quick to reserve their seat!”
