Good Food For Me – free nutritional program for seniors 65+

Are you 65 and over and would like to learn how you can save on your food bill and still eat well?

You’re invited along to the free being offered by Maroondah City Council that teaches you important yet simple, practical ways on how to live in better health through better nutrition.

Councillor Tasa Damante said Council was pleased to be offering the program again this year to encourage and support the health and wellbeing of Maroondah’s senior residents.

“The healthy eating and lifestyle program follows on from the success of the Good Food For Me program which Council hosted in June,” Cr Damante said.

“Eating right and staying fit are important no matter your age. However, as we get older our bodies have different needs, so certain nutrients become especially important for good health.

“Based on the level of interest and feedback we received from previous participants of the program, there is a need for a program of this kind where residents can improve the way they shop and prepare everyday meals, while saving on time and money,” he said.

One participant wrote:”Excellent program. I have changed daily choices immediately. Demonstrations of cooking and information by program staff was excellent. Thank you very much for this opportunity to improve my health and diet. I have learnt a great deal and will definitely recommend to others.”

Over the course of the program, participants will learn how to make simple recipes and healthy, economical snacks taking on board the nutritional needs of seniors.

Other topics covered include:

  • simple take-home healthy recipes (including a weekly practical cooking skills segment)
  • healthy snacks and the changing nutritional needs of seniors
  • tips for decluttering your kitchen and utilising your workspace
  • kitchen safety for poor vision, balance, hearing, or weak arms and hands
  • share ideas to reduce food waste and save money
  • safe food handling and storage ideas
  • learn how to read nutrition labels and make wise food purchases

Participants will be given opportunities to contribute to discussions and have hands-on experience to prepare easy meals, with a tasting afterwards. Program participants will also get to hear from guest speakers and will be provided with morning tea.

The Good Food For Me program is funded by the Commonwealth ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Support Program and is free to those registered and referred through My Aged Care.
