Willoughby City Council’s $10.5 million Gore Hill Park redevelopment was recognised for its innovative design in last night’s Parks and Leisure Awards.
Gore Hill Park, which opened in March after the 18 month overhaul, received a highly commended in the Community Facility of the Year category, which recognises innovative design, development and operation.
The redevelopment at St Leonards included a new synthetic sports oval, underground water detention tank, floodlights, playground, picnic tables, accessible change rooms, toilets, function room, kiosk, car park and bike racks.
With a shortage of sports fields and open space on the north shore, it’s a vital piece of infrastructure, with up to 3000 people using the facilities each week, Willoughby City Council general manager Debra Just said.
“The playground, perimeter path, outdoor gym, half basketball court and handball courts has meant more people are using the space more often. This project maximised space,” she said.
The facilities are accessible for prams and wheelchairs. The water tank under the oval prevents flooding to the whole area.
It was funded $9.5 million by the Australian Government and $1 million from Council.
