Government continues to support school choice

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Education and Training

Any suggestion the Department of Education is conducting a ‘crackdown’ on out of area enrolments is incorrect.

For many years now every Government primary school has had an intake area, the rules are not changing. There may be a small number of minor alterations to the intake maps which will be subject to further community consultation before any changes are finalised.

Our expectation is for many schools there will be minimal or no change to boundaries and where there is change it will reflect things such as geography, parent journey to work and bus routes.

To be very clear, under a Hodgman Liberal Government parents will always be able to apply to their school of choice outside their area, if capacity allows.
