must act to help those facing homelessness
and commercial tenants must not face eviction
urged to follow the rules and look out for each other
The Premier must act to legislate against
evictions to prevent more Tasmanians from becoming homeless or losing their
business.
Labor Leader, Rebecca White, said the new rules
should apply to both the private and commercial markets.
“We need to work now to ensure private and
commercial tenants who have lost their incomes due to COVID-19 do not face
eviction,” Ms White said.
“Legislating to prevent evictions is something
that should be implemented urgently.
“Labor is also
calling for the Premier to introduce other measures to protect Tasmanian
households and businesses, including a freeze on utility bills and 12 month
freeze on land tax.
“To deal with non-compliance with
strict quarantine measures, the Government should be investigating the option
to use rooms from hotels and other accommodation providers to mandate
compliance and keep our community safe.
“This will also help those individuals who need to quarantine but have no ability to do so in their family home.
“We also need to ensure the
hospitality sector is adequately resourced, especially PPE for cleaners, to
help them play their role in keeping people safe.
“I today join with the Premier in
urging people to adhere to self isolation regulations and I am calling on Peter
Gutwein to get tough on those who deliberately flout the rules.
“These are uncertain times and I want
to stress the importance of staying at home if you can, especially if you are
older or have an underlying illness.
“It is important we all act as a community to do the right thing so we can save lives.”
