This afternoon, Friday 24 March, marks a special day for the newest Police Security Officers who graduate from the South Australia Police Academy.
The 22 members of Course 3 range in age from 19 to 46 years and come from diverse employment backgrounds including retail, hospitality, fitness, administration and disability work.
Many of the course members had never held a firearm before and were new to understanding legislation in practical situations, but with practice and assistance from each other, their confidence and competence grew.
One graduate, Maddison, found the skills and experience she gained from her previous work in the hospitality industry, such as communication, leadership and shift work, would later assist her in her role as a Police Security Officer.
Maddison had ambitions to make a difference in her local community from a young age.
“It has been a dream of mine to become a part of the SAPOL family. I have a passion for helping the community and the variety of the job influenced me to apply,” said Maddison.
Reflecting on her highlights of the training, Maddison enjoyed the practical out-phase, firearms training and training in using tactical options.
Maddison will be posted to metropolitan school patrols and is looking forward to putting her training and new skills to work.
Maddison’s advice to those thinking of applying is don’t be afraid to ask questions, don’t let your age stop you and to study hard.
Joining Maddison in graduating today is James, who worked in the private security industry for two years prior to joining SAPOL. This experience developed James’ confidence, particularly in managing difficult situations.
James found the recruitment experience interesting, gaining success in his second application attempt. He found that taking the time to draw on personal experiences and life events during the panel interview was invaluable.
Similar to Maddison, James found the practical on the job experience interesting helped him consolidate what he had learned during his training and where he could put everything in perspective.
James said the course fostered an inclusive environment at the Police Academy where everyone felt comfortable to speak up and ask questions.
Equally, James found the training experience a positive one and course mentors supportive, generous and willing to give their time and advice, particularly to those who were struggling.
For those thinking of a career as a Police Security Officer, James said to just go for it.
“You regret the opportunities you don’t take. Considering the range of different backgrounds our course is from, anyone could be a good candidate. It’s just a matter of putting yourself out there,” said James.
SAPOL is currently recruiting for Police Security Officers and is keen to hear from people who are committed to contributing to the safety and security of the state.
