Grants now available to support International Day of People with Disability celebrations

  • Grants of up to $1,000 available for community organisations to celebrate International Day of People with Disability
  • Events will raise awareness, educate and inform the community about people with disability in Western Australia
  • Events and initiatives to align with McGowan Government’s State Disability Strategy
  • The State Government is making $100,000 available in sponsorship for inclusive events and activities to mark the International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

Disability Services Minister Don Punch today announced that the Department of Communities has funded Developmental Disability WA to provide a total of 100 grants of up to $1,000 for community organisations to celebrate IDPwD in 2021.

International Day of People with Disability is celebrated internationally on December 3 each year. It aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.

Events and initiatives eligible for sponsorship will raise awareness, educate and inform the broader community about people with disability in Western Australia.

Initiatives and events that empower people in achieving their goals and emphasise the importance of access and inclusion for people living with disability will also be eligible. Events held for IDPwD in previous years have included public awareness sessions, fun fairs, picnics and art exhibitions.

The sponsorship funding aligns with the vision of A Western Australia for Everyone: State Disability Strategy 2020-2030 to build a more inclusive Western Australia and empower people with disability to participate meaningfully in all parts of society, and applicants will be required to align their events or activities with the strategy.

Applications close on November 9 and successful applicants will be notified and announced shortly thereafter. Further information is available at

As stated by Disability Services Minister Don Punch:

“The International Day of People with Disability is an opportunity for us to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements and contributions of the 411,500 – or one in five – Western Australians with disability.

“The State Government is committed to building a more inclusive Western Australia where people with disability are engaged and feel empowered to live as they choose, in a community where everyone belongs.

“I am pleased that Developmental Disability WA will again be administering the IDPwD grants – and I encourage all community organisations to get on and apply for one of the hundred grants available to celebrate IDPwD in 2021.”
