- Applications are now open for the 2024-25 Connecting Schools Grant
- A total of $225,000 in funding is available for eligible schools registered to the State Government’s Your Move program
- Grant packages support active travel to school, encouraging students to walk, wheel, or ride more often for the school journey
Eligible schools can now apply for the State Government’s popular Connecting Schools Grant, with $225,000 available to support students and their families to get active for the trip to school.
The grants are offered through a partnership between the Department of Transport and Department of Education and are awarded to schools achieving results through the program.
There are more than 270 Western Australian schools registered to Your Move, representing a growing number of school communities that are dedicated to helping students and their families to walk, ride or scoot for the school commute – increasing physical activity and reducing car trips, traffic congestion and parking pressures.
The grants provide a key opportunity for schools to improve bicycle infrastructure and develop students’ road safety skills. Packages include bike and scooter parking facilities, skills tracks, bike skills and road safety education workshops to support and encourage greater active travel within the school community.
Grant applications close on Friday, 15 November 2024. For more information, visit the .
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
“The Cook Labor Government is committed to making active transport more accessible for Western Australians.
“We’re investing significantly in new cycling infrastructure right across the State, while also partnering with schools to encourage more students and families to take up active transport options for the morning and afternoon commute.
“Walking or riding to school with the kids is a win-win for the whole family. Kids are encouraged to be active and arrive at school ready to learn, while helping to reduce traffic and parking pressures at school sites.
“These grants help more Western Australian students walk, wheel or ride to school, increase their skills and confidence, and foster a positive culture of active travel in school communities.”
As stated by Education Minister Dr Tony Buti:
“This is a fantastic way for young people to embrace physical activity.
“Not only does exercise help to build strength and improve cardiovascular fitness, but it also helps increase feelings of positivity and improves mental health.
“I encourage all eligible schools to get involved in the program and support students’ health and wellbeing.”
