Greater diversity of housing options secured in City of Armadale

  • Changes to the City of Armadale’s local planning scheme will ensure more diverse and attractive housing options on land adjacent to the Kelmscott train station and around Kelmscott Senior High School. 

    Planning Minister Rita Saffioti today announced support for an amendment to the City’s local planning scheme to support greater diversity of housing options in close proximity to public transport.

    The introduction of new residential density codes will increase options for redevelopment through higher density housing types. It will also complement redevelopment works associated with the METRONET Denny Avenue level crossing removal project.

    New housing types will include one and two-bedroom dwellings, townhouse developments and two to three-storey apartment developments, providing greater opportunities for first homeowners and allowing residents to age in place.

    The new scheme is consistent with the McGowan Government’s METRONET vision to create transit oriented communities, providing greater housing options within walkable distance of public transport and local community amenity.

    Development applications will be subject to planning approval, including consistency with the State Government’s Design WA principles and guidelines released earlier this year, and may also be subject to review by the City of Armadale’s Design Review Panel.

    As stated by Planning Minister Rita Saffioti:

    “I welcome the City of Armadale’s response to the need for more housing options, and for planning for accommodating those dwellings close to public transport connections.

    “This is a proactive amendment to the local planning scheme that greatly supports the Government’s efforts to provide appropriate housing density in key growth areas and METRONET transport corridors.

    “It also goes a step further by ensuring that good design is at the centre of all developments and prioritises the retention of street trees – something that Armadale is known for.”

    As stated by Armadale MLA Tony Buti:

    “This is a contemporary approach to planning that will allow more people to live close to parks, bike paths and important transport corridors.

    “It works with a number of State Government projects underway in the area such as the METRONET Denny Avenue upgrade, cycle path upgrades and improvements to major roads.”
