Brighton life-savers are one step closer to patrolling from a new purpose built pavilion at Dendy Street Beach following a decision by VCAT to dismiss objections to the project.
Bayside Mayor Cr Clarke Martin welcomed the decision which clears the way for a new home for Brighton Life-saving Club and new facilities for beach goers.
“After more than three years of delays, this is a very positive outcome for our life-savers and visitors to Dendy Street Beach. The life-savers perform a valuable service for our community and visitors to the iconic beach with its world famous bathing boxes,” he said.
“The life-saving club volunteers have struggled to operate out of the existing dilapidated building for a number of years. With this VCAT decision they can look forward to a new modern, fit for purpose facility that will serve the club and the community for many years to come.”
The new pavilion will provide vastly improved facilities for local residents and visitors. These include upgrading the unsightly storm water outfall, car parking, toilets access paths as well as a new café.
Council now plans to develop detailed designs for the new life-saving pavilion and associated landscaping and drainage works and will endeavour to begin construction in 2020.
The VCAT decision follows approval for the project by Heritage Victoria, Aboriginal Victoria, DWELP and VicRoads. Council is also continuing to work with the EPA to resolve soil contamination discovered during site assessments for the pavilion project.
