Green thumbs in Division 3 leading way

Sunshine Coast Council

A recent analysis of households on the Sunshine Coast with garden waste bins has revealed Division 3 residents are leading the way, claiming five of the top six suburbs for percentage of households using this service.

Division 3 Councillor Peter Cox said he was really delighted to see these results and encouraged all Sunshine Coast residents to get on board.

“Waste that goes straight into landfill is our community’s biggest generator of greenhouse gas emissions,” Cr Cox said.

“This fortnightly green waste service frees up space in your general waste bin (red lid), and helps to decrease our community’s greenhouse emissions by diverting waste from landfill.

“The green waste bins help separate organic matter, such as grass clippings, prunings and leaves from other waste so it can be reused for mulch.

“Once mulched, it is available for collection from council’s resource recovery centres at no cost to our domestic customers.

“The top six suburbs currently using garden waste bins are Wurtulla, Bokarina, Aroona, Little Mountain and Currimundi in Division 3, and Pelican Waters, in Division 2.

“A garden waste bin is an easy way to manage your garden waste at home and the service costs $62.10 per annum or a little over $1 per week.

“The garden waste bin (lime green lid) service is currently being utilised by 35,000 homes throughout the region and council aims to see this figure increase by at least five percent each year.

“Although making the switch to a garden waste bin might seem like a small change, when the entire community comes together this simple action can help to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve our goal of becoming a zero-net emissions organisation and low carbon community by 2041.

“I encourage residents from across the Sunshine Coast to consider whether a garden waste bin might be a good addition to their household. It’s practical and sustainable.

“Delivering a healthy environment and liveable Sunshine Coast will take commitment and determination, but I’m confident if we work together, council and the community can achieve our vision to become Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative.”

Local real estate agent and Wurtulla resident Gemma Papin said waste was a major issue for our planet and we all had a part to play.

“As well as being good for the environment, our green waste bin is really convenient when tidying up the back yard and landscaping,” Mrs Papin said.

“This fortnightly service means we aren’t clogging up our general waste bin with organic matter that can be reused.

“I’m pleased to live in a community that is doing our bit to divert waste from landfill and decrease greenhouse gas emissions, so we can all live in a healthier environment.”
