High profile Tasmanian barrister, Greg Barns, has been awarded the 2019 Australian Lawyers Alliance’s (ALA) Member of the Year Award.
Greg Barns was presented with the award during the ALA’s national conference in Queensland today.
“Greg is a truly deserving recipient of our annual Member of the Year award,” said Mr Andrew Christopoulos, ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ President, ALA. “He makes himself available day after day to conduct media interviews, contribute to submissions and represent the ALA at hearings and inquiries.
“His ability to quickly understand the law and public policy, and realise its potential impact on individuals is impressive. He is passionate in his advocacy and he has a true belief in the importance of people being treated fairly by the justice system.”
Greg has been a long-time campaigner for the rights of the individual, the preservation of the rule of law, and protecting individuals against the oppressive actions of government.
Greg has been a member of the ALA for more than ten years, a member of the state committee and was ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ President in 2011 / 12.
“Greg has been tireless in his advocacy on a wide range of issues including the treatment of asylum seekers, drug reform, media freedoms and the rights of vulnerable people in our community,” Mr Christopoulos said. “Greg is a wonderful example of how one person can make a real difference. Year after year Greg’s ongoing commitment to justice and his support of the ALA are exceptional.”
