Detectives have charged a man with grievous bodily harm following an incident at Surfers Paradise in the early hours of this morning.
Around 1am, a 29-year-old Tugun man was sitting with friends on a bench at Orchid Avenue, when it will be alleged two men approached the group and took some of their food.
It will be further alleged that an altercation ensued, with one of the men punching a 29-year-old man causing him to lose consciousness and fall, striking the back of his head on the ground.
The men then allegedly fled on foot and witnesses contacted police.
The 29-year-old victim sustained head injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene, before being transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.
Police arrested a 27-year-old man nearby who has now been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm.
He is scheduled to appear at the Southport Magistrates Court today, Tuesday October 1.
