Local Government Minister Peter Gutwein needs to reveal what the Hodgman Government is doing to resolve the cost impacts on councils following the High Court’s decision on charitable rates remissions.
“The High Court decision has the potential to impact most, if not all, councils across our state,” Shadow Minister for Local Government Anita Dow said.
“There is a sense of urgency to the matter given Councils are working on their budgets and setting their rates for the next financial year.
“Councils are seeking bipartisan support for a legislative solution in the Parliament.
“Labor stands ready to work with Minister Gutwein and affected parties but we are hearing very little about where he stands.
“If there is no action from Minister Gutwein this will mean ratepayers will either pay more for their rates or receive a reduction in services.
“This is a matter of equity and Tasmanians need to know where Peter Gutwein stands.
“We will continue to work with the sector and individual Councils on this matter and encourage the Government to do the same.”
