Harmony Day Celebrations in Market Square

Devonport City Council Tasmania

The Devonport community will again have the opportunity to celebrate its cultural diversity and welcome its newest citizens in the annual Harmony Day celebrations to be held on Tuesday 21 March in Market Square, from 4pm to 7pm.

The multicultural talents of the local community will be on display at this free event, with performers from the Samoan, Timor Leste, Vanuatu, and Kiribati communities; a Sri Lankan children’s dance and song performance; and traditional Cambodian dancing, showcasing the unique culture and traditions of our diverse community members.

To complement the artistic entertainment, there will be food vendors as part of Street Eats, and activities for all ages and abilities, such as face painting and henna tattooing.

Harmony Day will commence with a Citizenship Ceremony at 2:30pm, where 8 citizens from countries including India, Wales and South Korea will be formally welcomed to our community as new citizens.

The theme for this year’s Harmony Day – “everyone belongs”, focuses on inclusivity, respect, and engendering a sense of belonging for all those who call Australia home, irrespective of their birthplace.

“Celebrating diversity, and people of all backgrounds and cultures, and what they bring to the local community, is the hallmark of Harmony Day celebrations”, the Mayor, Cr Alison Jarman said.

“The Harmony Day event and activities, provides an opportunity for everyone to come together, and celebrate the wonderful and rich cultures of the people who call our local community home. It is through the sharing and celebration of culture that understanding and respect is created, and our community is enriched”, Cr Jarman said.
