Harmony Week heralds Rugby Australia Community Talanoa

Rugby Au

Rugby Australia (RA) is commemorating Harmony Week with the launch of a nine-part Community Talanoa to ensure the culturally aligned direction of its Pasifika strategy.

Talanoa (consultation) is a widely used Pan-Pacific research methodology that promotes a culturally safe and appropriate environment to share and exchange ideas, stories, and skills.

Rugby VIC Diversity & Inclusion Manager/RA Pasifika Advisor Mike Motu Tauai said a well-structured Talanoa process would build a strong foundation for good Pasifika policy development, project design, and delivery.

“Respectful consultation is important to Pasifika communities and this process will empower Pasifika players, families, and communities to contribute to decisions that impact their engagement with Rugby in Australia,” Tauai said.

Rugby Australia will host Community Talanoa in eight cities across Australia as well as deliver online surveys to maximise engagement in this critical area.

RA Head of Inclusion Amy Perrett said Community Talanoa will amplify the voice Pasifika stakeholders and enable RA to consider the real-world impact of its developing Pasifika Inclusion Strategy.

“With Rugby Australia celebrating Harmony Week and the diversity of the people who make up this great game, it’s fitting we announce the beginning of this exciting Community Talanoa process,” Perrett said.

“We strongly believe Community Talanoa will provide policy solutions unique to Pasifika communities and lead to better outcomes and greater acceptance of the strategy within Pasifika communities.”

RA has also engaged Dr David Lakisa from Talanoa Consultancy, who will be supporting Tauai through the consultation process, reviewing the survey data and providing final recommendations on the strategy.”

The first Community Talanoa begins next Thursday March 30 in Hobart, Tasmania at Harlequins Rugby Club.
