Have a say on name of reserve in Dareton

NSW Geographical Names Board

The Geographical Names Board is calling for community feedback on a proposal by Wentworth Shire Council to name a reserve in Dareton as George Gordon Sporting Complex.

Chair of the Geographical Names Board Narelle Underwood said feedback is being sought on the proposal to name the site which is enclosed by Bertundy Street, Matong Street, Belar Street and Mitchell Avenue.

“It is important that place names reflect the character and history of the local area and community,” Mrs Underwood said.

“We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name.”

The proposed name honours George Gordon, a life member for the Coomealla Cricket Club, who passed away in 2011.

Mr Gordon volunteered at the club for 50 years, taking on roles including member of the committee for 24 years, President for eight years and Secretary for four years.

He coached junior sides for 10 years from 1965 to 1975 and was instrumental in having a turf wicket installed, at the same time becoming a volunteer curator, a position he held for many years.

The total area of the George Gordon Sporting Complex will cover George Gordon Oval as well as the areas containing the recently built second oval, the cricket nets and the netball courts.

Full details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board’s website.
