Hay Street comes to life

The City is an invigorating place to be, with new businesses opening their doors every month and a bursting summer events calendar – there’s something for everyone in the City of Light.

Perth’s Hay Street Mall has a brand-new Italian eatery, the first licenced alfresco venue in the mall in nearly 10 years.

Espresso and Prosecco, which received a $20,000 business improvement grant from the City of Perth, opened its doors this week.

Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said the business would bring visitors and breathe new life and experiences into the iconic shopping and entertainment precinct.

“This is a special milestone and what we hope will be the first of many restaurants to invest in an iconic part of Perth history.” Mr Zempilas said.

Located next to London Court, the glamorous Italian eatery offers the people of Perth breakfast, lunch and Aperitivo – a perfect spot for festive celebrations.

The Lord mayor said the café’s opening after the City had invested more than $760,000 in rejuvenating Hay Street mall.

“We added murals, native plant boxes, improved lighting, street furniture, decluttered the area and even installed a dazzling light exhibition designed by local artist Adam Cruickshank. This has helped bring people back to the mall and make it feel safer at night.

Works are underway to also give nearby Murray Street mall a similar facelift. The City also has a heritage grant program to support activation of the heritage properties in the central malls.

But it’s not just the Hay Street Mall that is attracting new businesses. In the past year dozens of new businesses have opened across the City.

“From Chanel and Sephora to Providore Doughnuts, the Ruinbar and the so many in-between, the City is changing for the better and we encourage everyone to come in and check it out!” said Mr Zempilas.

“The City is an invigorating place to be, with new businesses opening their doors every month and a bursting summer events calendar – there’s something for everyone in the City of Light.”

The City has developed a brand-new marketing campaign and a huge line up of events for the summer season to help support new and established businesses.

“This is the first City campaign under City of Light brand and showcases all the unique and exciting things on offer, and gets people from the Perth metro area excited about coming into the City,”

“From the wonder of the Rio Tinto Christmas Lights Trail, to sunny funfairs, vivid music festivals, and six new City of Light shows – Perth is alive with festive fun.”

“It’s a special time of year to be in the City and we welcome people from near and far to come and experience the magic. The season’s unmissable line-up of events and activities are sure to dazzle young and old.”
