Hazard Reduction Burn Goonoo State Conservation Area

The ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Parks and Wildlife Service with assistance from Castlereagh and Orana Rural Fire Service crews is conducting a large hazard reduction burn in Goonoo State Conservation Area (SCA) near Dubbo commencing on Sunday, weather permitting.

Hazard reduction burn

The hazard reduction will cover more than 1,300 hectares of Goonoo SCA along the Mendooran Rd and is likely to take about 5 days to complete.

Isolated rural properties to the west and travellers along Mendooran Rd may be impacted by smoke depending on the wind. Traffic control will be along Mendooran Rd in the burn’s initial stages.

The objective is to create a large fuel-reduced fire break on the western edge of the Mendooran Rd to protect life and property in case of any wildfires and reduce potential impacts on Allocasurinas, a critical food source for the vulnerable glossy black-cockatoos, which live in Goonoo.

Trails close to the burn are closed by signs. Visitors intending to go to Goonoo should check for up-to-date information on closures.
