The NSW ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a hazard reduction burn in the south east section of Wollemi ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Park, on Sunday 28 April, weather permitting.
NPWS area manager Glenn Meade said the 1450 hectare burn is located 20 kilometres northwest of Richmond, south of the Colo River.
“This burn will help protect the Park and limit the potential spread of wildfire to surrounding rural and semi-rural properties of Mountain Lagoon, Colo, Upper Colo and Blaxlands Ridge in the Hawkesbury,” Mr Meade said.
“Smoke from the burn program may be visible in the Richmond area, for a number of days.
“The burn is due to begin at about 10am on Sunday and motorists along the Putty Road are reminded to drive to conditions.
“Public access to these areas will be closed during the burning operations including the Mailes Ridge and T3 Walking Tracks to the Colo River and Upper Colo’s Colo Meroo Camping Area.
“We thank our neighbours for their understanding.
“People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors,” said Mr Meade.
These burns are some of the many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with the assistance of the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.
This hazard reduction burn is part of the NSW Government’s $76 million package over 6 years to boost bushfire preparedness and double hazard reduction in the State’s national parks, where conditions allow.
