Health scholarships delivering hospital workforce boost

The Rockliff Liberal Government is doing what matters for Tasmanians by delivering on its pledge to boost the number of health workers in our hospitals.

Thirty-three graduate allied health professionals are starting work as part of our $1.125 million Allied Health Scholarship Program, helping Tasmanians receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Most of the scholarship recipients have studied interstate and are excited to move to Tasmania to commence their careers.

Minister for Health, Guy Barnett, welcomed the graduate professionals to the health system, including those that have relocated from interstate.

“Our Government introduced the Allied Health Scholarship Program to bolster the allied health workforce across Tasmania, and to make Tasmania an even more attractive option for graduates to live and work,” Minister Barnett said.

“The scholarship provides an initial payment of $15,000 to help cover study fees, with a further $10,000 payment made upon completing three years of service in the Tasmanian Health Service.

“The program targets students across a range of hard-to-fill allied health professions who are completing their final year of study in 2023-2024 to either stay in the State after graduating or relocate and work in Tasmania.

“The majority of scholarship recipients are from interstate, and I thank them for choosing Tasmania, one of the best places in the world to live, work and raise a family. I wish them and all scholarship recipients well as they embark on a meaningful and fulfilling career in their chosen profession.”

Minister Barnett said the scholarship program has also enabled Tasmanians to return home to live and work, and be with friends and family.

Professions eligible for the Allied Health Scholarship Program include Psychology, Radiation Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Dental Therapists and Oral Health Therapists, Prosthetics and Orthotics, Speech Pathology, Podiatry, Physiotherapy and Radiography.

Further recruitment campaigns in physiotherapy, oral health therapy, speech pathology and radiation therapy will commence in March.
