The Healthy Serves Café at BendigoTennis Centre is living up to its name by providing a greater range of healthy food and drink options.
With support from the City of Greater Bendigo, VicHealth, Nutrition Australia and the dedication of the centre’s management, the Healthy Serves Café has successfully implemented the Victorian Governments, Healthy Choices guidelines for sport and recreation centres.
The Healthy Choices guidelines provide a framework for improving the availability and promotion of healthier foods and drinks by using a traffic light system to categorise foods and drinks as Green (best choice), Amber (choose carefully) and Red (limit).
Bendigo Tennis Centre Café and Events Manager James Raoul said the outcomes of meeting the guidelines were challenging at first, but over time more and more rewarding.
“The feedback from customers has been really positive and we have seen a huge change in what customers now desire,” Mr Raoul said.
“The new menu includes best choice delicacies such as fresh rolls, wraps, sandwiches, salads, pastas and soups.
“With brand new facilities, located in the best position overlooking Lake Weeroona and all the delicious, healthy options we now offer, we believe the centre is the perfect choice for a coffee with friends or a quick lunch break.
“The Healthy Serves Café is open for breakfast and lunch for anyone visiting the facility; whether for a hit of tennis, a function or just travelling on the way to work.”
The movement towards providing healthier foods is one of many to come and is part of the City’s commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of the Greater Bendigo community by making it easier for residents to access healthier choices at a number of local settings.
