The Great Southern’s unique natural assets have been put front-and-centre of a new project to drive ecotourism in the region.
The McGowan Government provided more than $115,000 to Gondwana Link through the Regional Economic Development (RED) Grants and the State Natural Resource Management Program to develop a website and sculpture project celebrating the Great Southern’s extraordinary natural and cultural assets.
The Heartland Journeys website, launched last night at an event in Albany, will promote regional visitation linked to natural history, Noongar culture and ecosystem restoration work by local communities.
The website features the stories of individuals and community groups and links are provided for visitors to further explore local tourism offerings.
Gondwana Link developed the project with significant in-kind contributions from passionate community groups and individuals in the Great Southern.
The Heartland Journeys website will complement the array of more detailed trails being developed across the Great Southern, and the ongoing work of local tourism groups such as Great Southern Treasures.
As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
“The outstanding natural and cultural assets of the Great Southern deserve to be celebrated.
“We support the work of individuals and community groups to preserve, restore and promote these assets.
“The Heartland Journeys website is an important opportunity to feature the stories and achievements of individuals and groups in natural and cultural preservation in this region.
“We look forward to seeing increased visitation in the region as a result of the outstanding work of the regional community and the Heartland Journeys website.”
