Heated pool allows older swimmers to stay forever young

Peter Petersen, 79, takes to the water each weekday at Logan North Aquatic Centre.

A group of older Logan swimmers is proving that age is no barrier to staying active.

They have embraced life and believe the only limitations to achieving a healthy lifestyle as a senior are barriers that are often self-imposed.

Group spokesman Peter Petersen said most members swam at the Logan North Aquatic Centre each weekday morning.

Mr Petersen, 79 years young, started coming to the centre in 1993.

He usually completes about 30 laps daily and says swimming is great for staying in shape.

The former civil engineer also enjoys the interaction with his fellow swimmers.

The camaraderie between the group’s members is evident.

It is clear this is one of the benefits of swimming together.

The group encourages everyone to take part and enjoy their time at the pool.

One of the major attractions of the Logan North Aquatic Centre is that the pool is heated all year round.

Logan City Council encourages all community members, of all ages, to learn to swim and exercise regularly.

Physical activity in the later years of life helps promote healthy ageing and independent functioning.

Swimming can help prevent or manage many chronic diseases. It can also improve physiological and psychological health.
