Council is calling on the Townsville community to have their say on legacy for the region ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Brisbane 2032 Games is expected to deliver over $8 billion in economic and social benefits across the State and Council wants to hear your ideas on opportunities that can help Townsville receive positive legacy outcomes in the lead up to, and long after the Games.
Locals are encouraged to get involved and head to Council’s to learn more about what Council hopes to achieve as a Games Delivery Partner, as well as take part in the Have Your Say survey on what you think Townsville’s strengths and opportunities for improvement are for its sporting infrastructure.
Three-time basketball Olympic medallist and Division 6 Councillor Suzy Batkovic is the Chairperson for Council’s Townsville 2032 Legacy Working Group and is passionate about providing world-class sporting facilities for our emerging sporting superstars.
“We have a population of amazing youth and we want to provide them with the facilities they need to grow into professional athletes and potentially compete at the Brisbane 2032 Games,” Cr Batkovic said.
“The Games for All Queensland promises to offer great opportunities for regional areas and we want our community to let us know what sporting infrastructure we need to add or improve on in Townsville,”
“As we deliver the Townsville 2032 Legacy Action Plan 2023-2024, there will be further opportunities for the community to get involved and provide Council with their input and feedback.
“Our action plan is built on three guiding pillars – Sustainable Infrastructure, Events and Tourism and Sporting Development – and we will hold further community consultation on these areas as they progress.”
“We want to hear from the people of Townsville so we can create the maximum benefit through projects and ideas for our city.”
Cr Batkovic said Council is passionate about advocating for our city and capitalising on these opportunities in support of growing Townsville and improving its community facilities.
“Building our shared legacy from Brisbane 2032 starts now and will provide enduring benefits long after the Games,” she said.
Council is working hard to secure a lasting legacy for our local community from the Games, including opportunities to renovate or repurpose existing sporting facilities to Olympic and Paralympic standard.
“This will allow Townsville to be considered to host lead up and qualifying events, as well as providing our locals with access to high quality facilities before and long after the Games,” Cr Batkovic said.
“Townsville could also be chosen to provide host stadium venues when Southeast Queensland facilities are unavailable during Games preparation, which would be an amazing outcome for the region and generate significant economic benefit.
“Ultimately, hearing from our community is critical in the development of our long-term program of sporting events for the region, including attraction plans for gaps in the program.”
Council’s is online now and closes on 31 July.
