Nominations are now open for the 2020 Hobsons Bay Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year Awards.
Mayor of Hobsons Bay Councillor Jonathon Marsden said the annual awards give the public an opportunity to acknowledge the excellent work being done by individuals in the community.
“These awards are a way for the city to celebrate those outstanding citizens who make our community a better place,” said Cr Marsden.
“If you know someone who deserves to be recognised for their contribution to our city, then nominate them for the Citizen of the Year Awards.
“Our Citizens of the Year play a special role in community and civic life. By being honoured this way, they are able to reach even more people and to raise awareness of the issues and projects they are passionate about.”
The winners will be recognised at Council’s special Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony on 26 January 2020 at the Williamstown Town Hall.
Dr Marilyn Olliff, Chair of the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre said that being named the 2019 Citizen of the Year has given her the opportunity to meet more local people and raise awareness of the things which she is passionate about in Hobsons Bay.
“If you know someone who is volunteering for our community and striving to make a positive difference, I encourage you to nominate them for the Citizen of the Year Awards,” said Dr Olliff.
“The award recognises their commitment and gives them a platform to promote their vision for the future.”
The Young Citizen of the Year Award is open to people aged 26 years or younger as of 26 January 2020.
Year 12 Mount Saint Joseph Girls’ College student Layla West, an Auskick coach and disability awareness advocate, said that her year as Young Citizen of the Year was an experience she would never forget.
“Being named the Young Citizen of the Year was an experience I will cherish for the rest of my life and one I would recommend for any young person, if they are given the opportunity,” said Layla.
All nominees will receive a certificate of nomination.
