Today I announce the appointment of Mr David Jessup as Australia’s first resident High Commissioner to the Republic of Maldives.
Australia and the Maldives share a strong interest in an Indian Ocean region that is peaceful, stable and prosperous, where countries of the region can cooperate, trade and thrive.
Australia and the Maldives will celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2024.
The appointment of Australia’s first resident High Commissioner in Malé demonstrates Australia’s increased engagement in the Indian Ocean, including through the Indian Ocean Rim Association.
The High Commission will allow us to further grow our relationship with an important neighbour and partner, building on our existing cooperation in education, climate change and maritime security.
Mr Jessup is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He has previously served overseas in Sweden, Thailand and the United States.
I thank our High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Paul Stephens, who has advanced Australia’s interests in the Maldives since 2022 as non-resident High Commissioner.
High Commissioner Stephens will remain Australia’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.
