Today, the latest State of the Service Report was tabled in Parliament.

The report shows the impact of the Albanese Government reform agenda to strengthen public administration and rebuild public trust.

The report addresses how the Australian Public Service (APS) is serving the Australian people. It examines the APS workforce and workplaces, capability, leadership and integrity to help agencies make informed workforce decisions.

The report highlights substantial progress on:

  1. Strengthening workforce capability: The Albanese Government is building a more skilled and confident workforce by bringing core expertise in-house. This includes implementation of the Strategic Commissioning Framework, Australian Government Consulting, the Capability Reinvestment Fund, and conducting Capability Reviews.
  2. Creating an attractive workplace: Enterprise agreements underpinned by successful service-wide bargaining are supporting mobility between agencies and better pay and conditions for staff.
  3. Enhancing workforce representation: Initiatives such as the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Employment Strategy and Action Plan, along with the First Nations SES100 program, are promoting leadership diversity and cultural safety within the APS.
  4. Restoring trust with the Australian People: The Albanese Government is committed to rebuilding public trust through a strong emphasis on integrity. This includes the expansion of the APS Values to include stewardship and implementation of the APS Integrity Action Plan at all levels of the APS.

Under Section 44 of the Public Service Act 1999, the APS Commissioner is required to report annually on the state of the service over the past year. The 2023-24 report is to be issued by APS Commissioner, Dr Gordon de Brouwer.
