The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced today the appointment of Prof. WANG Yang as the University’s Vice-President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA), starting October 1, 2020.
Prof. Wang is currently Dean of Science and Chair Professor of Mathematics at HKUST. A world-renowned mathematician with wide ranging research interests, Prof. Wang has published over 100 research journal papers in both pure and interdisciplinary mathematics, many of which in top journals. He was also a Program Director at the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Science Foundation between 2006 and 2007. His latest appointment is the result of a rigorous global search.
Mr. Andrew LIAO Cheung-Sing, Chairman of HKUST Council, was pleased about the new appointment. “With Prof. Wang’s strong leadership and interpersonal skills, his good understanding of the University community, his appreciation of the challenges faced by the University and the direction that HKUST is heading to – including the important development initiative of the Guangzhou campus – I am sure that he is well-positioned to serve in the new capacity to handle institutional advancement and enhance the visibility of the University both locally and globally.”
Prof. Wei SHYY, President of the HKUST, also extended his warm welcome to Prof. Wang. “Prof. Wang has first-hand and deep understanding of the University, and has been engaged locally and internationally. He will strengthen HKUST’s visibility, advance our strategic partnerships, initiate fund-raising, and further deepen our connections with alumni. I would also take this opportunity to thank him for his numerous contributions as the Dean of Science.”
Prof. Wang received his Bachelor degree in Mathematics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1983 and obtained his PhD degree in Mathematics from Harvard University in 1990. He started his academic career with the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1989 and then moved on to be the Department Chair and Professor of Mathematics at Michigan State University in 2007. He joined HKUST as Head of the Department of Mathematics in August 2014 and has been Dean of School of Science since 2016, during when he has helped found the Big Data for Bio Intelligence (BDBI) Lab and the highly popular Big Data Technology MSc program.
