HKUST Satellite Activities in Support of HK Fintech Week

The School of Business and Management of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) has unveiled a series of activities for students and the industry to show its full support for Hong Kong Fintech Week which started today.

As a satellite event of the InvestHK’s Fintech Week, the School partnered with the Fintech Association of Hong Kong to present an industry panel on November 1. The event entitled: “Bank 4.0 and the Future of Financial Services” featured five experts in the field to discuss the latest technological advancements and their impacts on the world of banking and financial services. Held at HKUST Business Central, the event attracted an audience of over one hundred alumni and industry practitioners.

To extend its momentum, the School organized Hong Kong’s first virtual banking hackathon Bizkathon@HKUST on November 2 and 3. Open to all students and alumni from local tertiary institutions, the event attracted 25 teams of over 120 participants. Advised by alumni mentors with Fintech background and other industry practitioners, participating teams were tasked with a 24-hour challenge to develop innovative solutions to help virtual banks win the trust of clients and automate their operation procedures. Sponsored by three virtual banks – PAObank, WeLab and ZA Bank, the activity provided an excellent opportunity for participants to prepare for the arrival of virtual banking services in Hong Kong and establish an early connection with the industry.

“Our School plays an integral part of the fabric of promoting Fintech,” said Prof. TAM Kar-Yan, Dean of HKUST Business School and the head of a major Fintech Research Project in Hong Kong funded by the Research Grants Council. “As a business school within a university of science and technology, we are ideally positioned to advance the knowledge in this multi-disciplinary field and groom new talent for the finance industry.”

To conclude this series of events that coincide with Hong Kong Fintech Week, the School will also join hands with HashKey Digital Asset Group, a leading fintech goup and blockchain research institution based in Hong Kong, to launch the for students on November 22 and 23. With an aim to deepen the understanding of blockchain technology and its applications, this activity will recruit teams not only from HKUST, but other local universities as well. This event will inspire students who are interested in the thriving fintech ecosystem and encourage fintech development in Hong Kong.
