The City of Hobart is giving away 4000 plants to 200 households in a push to help green thumbs create their own, unique nature strip.
Applications can be made
“Taking ownership of the nature strip at the front of your house by planting it out with a mix of plants is a great way to bring colour and vibrancy to your street and neighbourhood,” Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.
“It also brings neighbours together by encouraging people to think more carefully about how they want their streetscape to look and feel through nature strip gardening.
“Our nursery team has been busy cultivating 4000 plants for our winter nature strip plant give-away, and I can’t wait to see what people do with the plants.
“Applying is easy, you just have to be a Hobart resident and have a nature strip outside your house.”
Sustainability in Infrastructure Portfolio Chair Bill Harvey said there was a great range of low-growing, hardy plants successful applicants can choose from.
“We’ve been cultivating a range of suitable nature strip plants at our nursery especially for this nature strip plants give-away including showy pigface, correas and grevilleas as well as kangaroo paws and westringias,” Cr Harvey said.
“Last year 170 Hobart residents took up the opportunity and have added plants from our nursery to their nature strips, with the greatest demand for plants coming from residents in Lenah Valley, Mt Nelson and West Hobart.
“This year we want to top that target by giving away 20 free plants to 200 eligible households and would love to see applications from right across Hobart.
“When landscaping your own nature strip, it is important to follow our guidelines and ensure clear views of sight are kept for vehicles reversing in and out of driveways.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for 200 households across Hobart to be inventive and create a beautiful, low maintenance nature strip garden.”
The plants will be available for collection in June and July and can be planted over winter ready to grow in spring.
The City of Hobart would also like to remind the community that there is still support available to those who, due to mobility or other issues such as poor health or age, need help maintaining their nature strip.
