The City of Hobart is set to host a grand Freedom of Entry march, a time-honoured tradition dating back to medieval times, celebrating the prestigious granting of Freedom of Entry to the Australian Navy’s namesake vessel, HMAS Hobart.
This event, planned for Saturday 9 March, promises to be a spectacle of high significance, generating excitement among locals.
Freedom of Entry ceremonies are esteemed events, symbolising the highest accolade a town or city can bestow upon a group or individual.
The ceremony holds particular importance for the navy, with the scroll granting Freedom of Entry proudly displayed aboard the honoured vessel.
City of Hobart CEO Michael Stretton said: “The Freedom of Entry march is a cherished tradition that highlights the strong bond between the City of Hobart and the Australian Navy.
“It is an honour to host this ceremony, showcasing our city’s rich maritime heritage.”
The ceremony will commence with a procession, led by the crew accompanied by the navy band, marching along the Hobart waterfront from to Parliament Lawns.
Upon arrival, the parade will be inspected and presented with an ornate scroll authorising the granting of Freedom of Entry.
The parade will be held the day after International Women’s Day.
“As we celebrate this tradition, it is fitting to recognize the significant leadership roles held by women in the Australian Navy, including the Commander of the HMAS Hobart,” Mr Stretton said.
The march and ceremony are planned to take place around the waterfront, minimising traffic disruptions and complementing the vibrant atmosphere of the Salamanca Markets.
Approximately 150-200 sailors, adorned in full dress uniform, will participate in the march, accompanied by a marching band.
The event will commence at 11am near Macquarie Wharf 2, proceeding along the foreshore to Parliament Lawns between 11:15am and 11:30am.
Following the 20 minute-ceremony on the lawns, there will be a brisk march to the debunking point in front of the IMAS.
