Hobart has welcomed the launch of Rex Airlines today, with the inaugural new daily flight from Melbourne touching down.
Victoria is Tasmania’s largest visitor market making up 31 per cent of total visitation, with our state welcoming nearly 400,000 visitors from Victoria in the year to June 2023.
Premier and Minister for Tourism, Jeremy Rockliff, said the introduction of Rex Airlines to Tasmania’s busiest domestic connection is a welcome boost, with this new flight route providing an additional 2400 seats per week between Melbourne and Hobart.
“It is fantastic to see this service begin ahead of the busy spring-summer tourist season, and I thank Rex for its confidence in Tasmania,” the Premier said.
“These additional flights will also provide the opportunity to further boost Tasmanian service exports and deliver more options for freight.”
Hobart is the fourth Tasmanian destination for Rex Airlines, with the airline already having a strong established network connecting communities with Tasmania, with flights operating between Melbourne and Burnie, Devonport and King Island.
The addition of this new flight service to Hobart supports the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s access and aviation strategy, which is focused on building capacity and frequency to and from Tasmania with a number of operators, providing more choice for Tasmanian communities and visitors, creating a competitive environment for flight prices.
