Wild weather overnight has shut down many roads on Kangaroo Island, including the island’s main road to the ferry terminal. Motorists are advised to take care due to flooding and fallen trees.
A drainage culvert is flooded on Hog Bay Road at Haines, about halfway between Kingscote and Penneshaw.
Just before 4am on Wednesday 5 October, a vehicle attempting to cross the flooded culvert became stuck. Luckily, the driver was helped from his vehicle by a passing motorist and there were no injuries.
Several other roads that may have been alternate routes, including Redbanks Road to Boundary Road (tree down) and Halls Road to Moores Road (flooded), are currently impassable.
Locals in four wheel drives may detour Hog Bay Road, Haines via Redbanks Road all the way into American River, then back out along American River Road, but beware this will be very slow going. This is recommended for local traffic only.
Council are on scene to assist clearing the roads and erecting signage.
Sealink is aware and notifying ferry passengers.
