³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ of hockey hosts 2023 Hockey Australia Masters Championships

  • 2023 Hockey Australia Masters Championships kicks off today
  • Nearly 1,900 competitors to descend on Perth for the two-week championships
  • Mass participation event will boost local hospitality businesses and tourism operators

The 2023 Hockey Australia Masters Championships kicks off in Perth today, bringing thousands of passionate hockey players and supporters to Western Australia.

The championships, run by Hockey Australia, brings together nearly 1,900 people from 140 teams around the country to compete in men’s, women’s and over 50s tournaments across six venues and seven pitches.

For the first time, the 2023 event combines both the women’s and men’s championships across the following dates:

  • Women’s Masters Friday 22 September to Saturday 30 September;
  • Men’s Over 34s-45s Saturday 23 September to Sunday 1 October; and
  • Over 50s through to Over 80s Thursday 28 September to Saturday 7 October.

The majority of championship matches and the main event hub will be held at Perth Hockey Stadium in Bentley, the home of hockey in Australia.

Matches will also be held at other venues throughout the tournament, including Melville Toyota Hockey Stadium, Troy Pickard Hockey Centre in Warwick, Lakelands Hockey in Fremantle, Shenton College and Aquinas College.

The two-week event will provide a great boost to local tourism and hospitality businesses, adding to other mass participation events held in WA this year including the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships, Australian Surf Life Saving Championships and UCI Mountain Bike Marathon Masters World Championships, which attract thousands of out-of-State visitors and support the local economy.

“The 2023 Hockey Australia Masters Championships are another great opportunity to showcase WA as a fantastic tourism destination to out-of-State visitors.

“Mass participation events, like these championships, are an important part of our event strategy, as they attract thousands of out-of-State visitors and competitors to WA, and inject millions into our local tourism and hospitality businesses.

“I hope everyone that travels to WA for this event is able to enjoy our city’s tourism hotspots and find some time to venture out into the regions.”

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

“Western Australia has a rich history and strong community connection to hockey, so I think it’s fitting that Perth is hosting this year’s Hockey Australia Masters Championships.

“Being our country’s home of hockey provides a great opportunity to showcase our State to the rest of the nation through this two-week championship event, while raising Perth’s profile as one of the sporting capitals of Australia.”
