Camberwell police have located what appears to be a handmade handgun following a search of a dumped car in Kew this morning.
Police were first called to Disraeli Street after two men were seen smashing the window of a vehicle about 12.50am.
It was reported the men had taken tools from the vehicle before they drove off in a silver Nissan Navarro utility.
Boroondara police responded and caught sight of the Ute in the middle of Eglington Street with its doors open and two men onboard.
When officers tried to intercept the car the driver sped off, driving up onto the footpath of Derby Street to get away.
Camberwell units found the abandoned utility in Gladstone street a short time later with its doors open and engine running.
Unfortunately a search of the area failed to find the two men.
Police seized a handmade handgun from the car and several tools and toolboxes suspected to have been stolen.
The vehicle, which was found to be bearing cloned plates, was also confirmed to be an outstanding stolen car.
Boroondara Crime Investigation Unit are investigating and will have a number of enquiries to make as the utility has been seized and will be sent for forensic testing.
