- State Budget locks in record $2.8 billion in 2024-25 to continue delivering Miles Government’s ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s for Queenslanders plan
- Funding will support up to 600 new modular homes, as part of housing big build
More ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s for Queenslanders are on their way with the Miles Government’s upcoming state Budget locking in $2.8 billion in crucial funds to deliver its housing plan, including hundreds more modular homes.
Premier Steven Miles made the announcement today at the QBuild Rapid Accommodation and Apprentice Centres in Eagle Farm, where new modular homes are under construction for the Torres Strait.
The Budget backs in funding to support up to 600 more modular homes in partnership with the private sector to be underway by year’s end.
Modular homes are built in a factory and are then delivered to site, where they are set up in a fraction of the time of a traditional build.
Ordering 600 more modular homes will help this part of the housing sector grow, and will go to locations including Bundaberg, Innisfail, Mackay, and Warwick, along with others throughout remote and regional Queensland.
These homes can get people out of temporary accommodation quicker – where the government is currently investing millions of dollars – as on-site construction time can be three months compared to a year for many traditional builds.
The state’s plan is in a stark contrast to the LNP who sent social housing backwards by hundreds of homes, cut workers from the state’s public builder QBuild and who are now blocking legislation that will help thousands of families buy their own home.
Earlier this year, the LNP’s Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett labelled modular homes built for families in Bundaberg as “too much”.
Now the LNP’s secret Commission of Inquiry has been revealed, which is their plan to cut funding and public servants to achieve their debt reduction goals.
That means thousands of homes and the people who build them will be on the chopping block, under a government led by David Crisafulli and Jarrod Bleijie.
As stated by Premier Steven Miles:
“As your Premier, I am doing what matters for Queenslanders – delivering more homes, better healthcare services and critically, cost of living relief to every household.
“It’s our plan that’s delivering one million more ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s for Queenslanders.
“My first budget as Premier of the state will help get more homes up off the ground, put more tradies on the tools, provide support for renters and our hardworking homelessness organisations.
“I know that to build the homes Queensland needs, we need to do things differently, which is why QBuild and businesses across the state will be enlisted to rollout more modular homes.”
As stated by Deputy Premier and Treasurer Cameron Dick:
“The Miles Labor Government is doing what matters for Queenslanders, by delivering safe and affordable places to call home.
“We are doing this by pulling every lever possible.
“To deliver the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s for Queenslanders we’ve committed $2.8 billion in the upcoming Budget, the largest investment in housing in Queensland’s history.
“This record investment in the State’s housing means we will continue this momentum and provide more housing for all Queenslanders.
“David Crisafulli’s failure to commit to the targets in the housing plan means he will cut investment and hurt renters.”
As stated by Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon:
“To build more homes, faster we’re utilising our public builder QBuild and Queensland businesses to deliver hundreds more modular homes.
“This is all part of the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s for Queenslanders plan, which the LNP will cut.
“Just like when they cut 1,600 QBuild workers, the people responsible for building, maintaining and upgrading homes.
“After suggesting ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s for Queenslanders was too much, the LNP are now saying the quiet bit out loud describing initiatives like our modular homes as “too much”.”
