Homicide Squad seek witnesses over death of man located in Taree bushland

Homicide Squad detectives are appealing for witnesses as the investigation into the death of a man whose body was located in bushland north of Taree last week.

A crew from NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), located the remains at 6.10am last Thursday (27 December 2018), on Yarratt Road, after they had put out a small fire in the Yarratt State Forest.

While the man has yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be a man in his early 40s.

Police are awaiting the results of a post mortem examination to also determine how he died.

Officers from Manning-Great Lakes Police District established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic officers.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad and Manning-Great Lakes Police District are investigating the man’s death under Strike Force Gretna.

As the investigation continues, detectives are seeking information from the community to determine how the man came to be in the forest area, and who may have been with him.

Investigators believe the man died at another location and his body was dumped in the forest either late on Wednesday night or the early hours of Thursday morning.

While he may have been brought to the area under darkness, strike force detectives are urging motorists with dash-cam and travelling in or through that area to provide copies of footage to local police.

Further, investigators would be keen to speak with anyone who has any information that may assist the investigation, including those who may know the identity of the man.
