Honouring legacy of Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue AC CBE DSG

On behalf of the Board of Directors and members of the MCA, we pass on our sincere condolences to the family of Dr O’Donoghue.

Much has been written about Dr O’Donoghue and her lifelong advocacy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Her advocacy, dedication and resolve is a legacy that will continue to be felt by future generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia.

Dr O’Donoghue was a key architect of the Native Title Act, following the 1992 Mabo decision of the High Court of Australia.

While recognising Australia’s First Peoples and their continued connection to Country, the legislation has ensured changes in land access, protection and promotion of cultural heritage, enhancing employment opportunities and fostering intergenerational wealth outcomes for Traditional Custodians.

Australia has much to praise Dr O’Donoghue for. Dr O’Donohue devoted her life to the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, this now falls upon all Australians to embrace Dr O’Donoghue’s devotion.
