Each year on November 11, we pause to remember Australians who served in our armed services, particularly those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Remembrance Day is a time to reflect on that sacrifice and the enduring impact of war on communities across the world.
A special anniversary year
While World War I is the central focus of Remembrance Day, the date also commemorates the service of veterans from all conflicts. The major milestone anniversaries in 2024 are:
- 110 years since the start of World War I
- 80 years since the D-Day invasions in Europe
- 50 years since Australia withdrew our troops from Vietnam
- 25 years since Australia sent troops to East Timor.
