Today, 18 August, marks Vietnam Veterans Day.
The conflict had a profound impact on our State, with approximately 17 Tasmanians killed among a total of 2,300 Tasmanians serving in Vietnam.
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Guy Barnett, said at a service in St Helens that today is a sacred occasion, allowing Australians to pay special tribute to the men and women who served.
“Today, we pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by our Vietnam veterans,” Minister Barnett said.
“We renew our commitment to supporting them and their families and remain steadfast in our efforts to ensure that these heroes receive the recognition that they have earned.
“The Vietnam War spanned 12 years, having a significant impact on Australia.
“Today, I pay tribute to the valiant Tasmanians and Australians who served so bravely in this conflict.
“We acknowledge the service and sacrifice of all those who have fought for the freedom of this country and on this day our Vietnam Veterans and their motto, ‘Honour the Dead but Fight like Hell for the Living.'”
