Brenda Matthews with her book The Last Daughter

In celebration of NAIDOC Week this July, Hornsby Shire Council is excited to present a series of free, engaging activities held at Hornsby Library.

The week begins with a free screening of The Last Daughter and a special ‘meet the author’ event featuring Brenda Matthews. Following the screening, Brenda will share details of her childhood and her quest for understanding and reconciliation in an engaging talk. Through her powerful story, Brenda encourages attendees to walk together with deeper connection and understanding.

There will also be a variety of events throughout the school holidays, catering to children of all ages, from NAIDOC Storytime for ages 0-7 to Rock Painting Workshops led by Wiradjuri artist, Peta-Joy, for ages 5-12. Council’s NAIDOC Week events include:

  • on Friday 5 July, 2pm-5pm
  • on Sunday 7 July to Sunday 14 July, 10am-5pm
  • Indigenous Art Workshops with Peta-Joy Williams – Rock Painting on:
  • on Monday 8 July, 2pm-4pm
  • on Thursday 11 July, 10am-11am
  • on Friday 12 July, 10am-12pm

Hornsby Shire Council Mayor the Hon Philip Ruddock AO is encouraging locals to attend one of the free events and learn about Aboriginal culture and Country.

“NAIDOC Week provides a wonderful opportunity for residents to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” said Mayor Ruddock.

“We’re proud to present these free events for our community during NAIDOC Week 2024. Come along and join us at Hornsby Library to learn and pay respect, but also have a lot of fun.”
