Tenders will soon be advertised to reconstruct a section of Horseshoe Bend Road at the bridge following major flooding damage, which occurred late last year.
The design of this section of road, including new guardrail, will take into consideration the likely impact of extreme rain events on the road surface.
A geotechnical assessment has been completed and designs are currently being finalised.
Assessment by geotechnical engineers was delayed due to high demand after widespread flooding caused extensive damage across many regions.
The tender process is scheduled to start in June and works are expected to begin in September and be completed by November this year. The timing of the works has been staged to avoid the winter months, and allow for construction to occur when conditions are better.
This section of road will remain closed with detours in place until the works are completed.
Geotechnical engineers have confirmed that it is unsafe for drivers, even in a single lane configuration, due to the road surface condition, limited width and sight distance.
“I’m pleased that the tender process will start in the coming weeks, and that the reconstruction works can begin in September,” Cr Mike Bodsworth said.
“I know the process is taking time and we thank everyone for their patience during this extended road closure.”
